TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL

Fiat Chrysler New Zealand has launched a safety recall programme for front passenger and drivers’ airbags for selected Chrysler 300 models.

The recall is part of a global programme that has affected a wide range of car manufacturers and models fitted with airbags produced by the Takata company. The recall has been initiated due to the abnormal deployment of airbags in a very small number of cases, none of which have been reported in Fiat Chrysler models in New Zealand.

Owners of the affected vehicles who can be identified through registration data will be contacted by Fiat Chrysler New Zealand to arrange for replacement airbags to be fitted to their vehicles.

FIAT CHRYSLER ELECTRONIC SHIFT LEVER RECALL

Fiat Chrysler New Zealand has launched a safety recall programme for the electronic shift lever fitted to a number of Chrysler models which will enhance the safe operation of these vehicles.

The safety recall has been initiated after a small number of owners have exited their car with the engine running without selecting ‘Park’ with the electronic shift lever or applying the parking brake. This has led to cases where the vehicle has moved after the driver has exited causing a risk of the vehicle striking people or property.

The remedial work involves upgrading the software within the gearbox so that should the car not be in ‘Park’ when the driver’s door is opened, the electronic shift lever system will automatically shift into ‘Park’ by itself, removing the risk of the vehicle moving once the driver has exited the car.

The affected cars are entirely safe to drive prior to the fitment of the software upgrade provided owners always ensure that ‘Park’ is correctly engaged prior to exiting their car as well as applying the parking brake. Once the car is in ‘Park’ the car cannot move unintentionally regardless of whether the engine is running or not.

Owners of the affected vehicles who can be identified through registration data will be contacted by Fiat Chrysler New Zealand to arrange for the software upgrade to be fitted to their vehicles.
