Chrysler Goes Four-Wheel-Drive

Bigger than a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Chrysler Aspen was unveiled at the recent Detroit Motor Show and is aimed primarily at the US market, where large SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) are still very popular. It is unlikely to go into right-hand-drive production, so will probably not come to New Zealand.

The Aspen is aimed at large families, with its three rows of seats capable of accommodating six or seven occupants in total luxury. Interior appointments include two-tone leather and suede upholstery matched to a light wood trim. Satellite navigation, personal air conditioning for all occupants, and power outlets for laptop computers and other electronic equipment are among the equipment offerings. Even the rear tailgate is power-operated and can be opened from outside using the remote control.

The Chrysler Aspen is powered by either the 4.7-litre V8 Magnum engine or the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 with MDS cylinder deactivation technology – the same technology used in the Chrysler 300C and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Aspen runs in full-time four-wheel-drive and can be optioned with a low-range transfer case for going off-road, or just with a single for those who won’t be venturing into the wilderness.

Chrysler executives have described the Aspen as the 300C of Sport Utility Vehicles and they believe that its smooth styling and dramatic Chrysler grille will resonate with buyers of this type of vehicle in the United States and similar left-hand-drive markets, such as the Middle East.
